Is Your Lower Back Screaming for support?
This might be what you’re looking for
Lower back pain is something that plagues so many adults. You want to be active but you are constantly battling your lower back. Maybe you wake up stiff every morning. Maybe shoveling out from the recent snow storms has left your back feeling cranky and uncomfortable.
When I was 39, I suddenly had lower back pain. Out of nowhere it seemed. I went to see one of the physical therapists in my office and she said that my glutes were weak so my lower back was doing all the work. I remember thinking, “how is that possible? I’m so active?” But sure enough, during my next yoga class I observed that I never used my glutes, not even once without purposefully engaging them.
Interesting.
Over the next few months, I actively engaged my glutes whenever I could. During yoga, while walking, swimming, and even going up stairs. As my glutes got stronger, my back pain went away and never came back.
Since then, when I teach yoga, I cue my students which muscles to engage while practicing so that they understand the full nature of each pose, what is supposed to be happening, and what they should feel (ideally) while practicing. Everyone’s body is different, but we all have the same basic parts and pieces. Functionally, if certain muscles are strong and mobile, each body “should” operate without pain.
Why yoga?
Yoga is a practice that addresses not only your physical body, but your mind as well. It builds physical strength, increases mental resilience, and improves mobility so that you feel more comfortable in the body that you have.
Lower back pain can interfere not only with your ability to be active, but with your overall enjoyment of life. Chronic pain drains your energy, leaving you exhausted by the end of the day. Depression and chronic pain often go hand in hand, and many studies have shown how important movement is when you feel depressed.
I have been practicing and teaching yoga since the mid 1990s and have experienced first hand the subtle and not so subtle effects of practicing yoga:
- Better overall physical strength. Yoga builds functional strength using your own body weight. It helps you build muscle and bone and you can do it anywhere. A mat helps, but isn’t required. All you need is your body.
- Improved core strength. Because yoga is functional, it helps you strengthen your abdominals, your glutes, your pelvic floor and more. While the poses might look funny, they have been time tested to strengthen every part of your body, including your core. A strong core supports your lower back so that it doesn’t strain.
- Increased mobility. The old adage “use it or lose it” definitely applies to mobility as we age. If you don’t stretch regularly, you will slowly lose the ability to reach your feet to put on your socks or shoes. It will become harder to sit or move comfortably. You’ll feel achy and stiff. Yoga improves mobility through stretching and targets the muscles that can cause a cranky lower back.
- Relaxed mind. When you move and breathe together, it naturally calms the mind, even without trying. Connecting your breath with your movement helps you feel more in control over your body, and that comes with you off the mat and in your life. What you practice on the mat comes with you when you step back off again.
